WHY THIS MATTERS

One in five Canadians live with a brain condition.

Brain conditions—including mental health disorders, neurological disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, brain injuries, and substance use disorders—are the leading cause of disability in Canada. They affect millions, disrupt lives, and strain our healthcare system. As our population ages and grows, this challenge will only intensify.

Brain conditions occur throughout life:

Childhood: Neurodevelopmental conditions like autism and ADHD.

Young adulthood: Many mental illnesses emerge in early life.

Working age:
Brain injuries, cancer, concussions and addition occur at all ages

Later life:
Stroke, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.

Despite Canada’s strengths in neuroscience, mental health research, and artificial intelligence, our world-class researchers remain fragmented. This lack of coordination limits our ability to turn discoveries into real-world solutions.

THE SOLUTION:
A CANADIAN BRAIN RESEARCH INITIATIVE

It is time to unite our world-class researchers, maximize collaboration across disciplines, and accelerate breakthroughs to improve the lives of millions.

A Canadian Brain Research Initiative will:

Accelerate Discoveries  Coordination leads to faster discoveries and smarter funding use. We must invest in research that reflects Canada’s needs, or risk losing critical knowledge and falling behind.

Transform Brain Health

Advances in prevention, treatment, and care are within reach. We must act now to turn discoveries into impact for Canadians.

Support the Next Generation Young researchers are the future of brain health innovation. Without stable funding, Canada risks losing top talent and the infrastructure needed to drive progress.

We already have the roadmap for a national brain research initiative—
now we need our leaders to act.

THE BENEFITS:
What This Means for Canadians

1.

Coordination fuels innovation, ensuring Canadian discoveries drive progress where it matters most.

2.

Connecting research with healthcare leads to faster diagnoses, improved treatments and better quality of life for Canadians.

3.

Stable funding keeps Canada at the forefront of brain research, transforming brain health for generations to come.

Brain health is the future—let’s make it a priority.

HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN

To drive real progress in brain health, we need a stable, long-term national commitment that provides the resources and support necessary for discovery and innovation.

This funding will:

Equip the next generation of researchers and innovators: A National Transdisciplinary Training Platform will empower researchers and research partners with the applied skills that make research findings transferable and actionable across different sectors—whether for clinical application, policy development, or community impact.

Strengthen and integrate shared research infrastructure: Invest in the skilled professionals and infrastructure, leveraging resources across Canadian institutions big and small, to give equal opportunity for innovation.

Make research on the brain and mental health a national priority with stable, targeted funding for the creation of a Canadian brain research initiative, and a dedicated, sustained commitment to fund this priority to improve health outcomes and quality of life for people in Canada

– House of Commons Finance Committee

In its 2025 federal budget recommendations, the House of Commons Finance Committee urged the government to prioritize brain research and mental health with sustained, targeted funding.
